Imagine a nation transforming from a predominantly rural society to a majority urban one within a single generation. China's urban population has skyrocketed from 18% in 1978 to 66% in 2023. While urbanization has fueled economic growth, many cities now struggle with emerging issues relating to climate change, traffic congestion, and environmental pollution... By equipping students with the competency to "think globally, act locally", the Department of Urban Planning and Design (UPD) at XJTLU leverages its international expertise to tackle the challenges of urban renewal and integrated urban-rural development in China, ultimately aiming for a "better city, better life".
As the saying goes, "we shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us". This principle extends to cities as well. The way we plan, design, and manage our cities has a profound impact on the lives of those who inhabit them. This is where UPD comes in. UPD prepares students for change. It educates them to use the best available information to make decisions that underpin and facilitate sustainable development. Our task is to provide a vision for the future of a city, a vision that may be further changed and developed over time through creative action or intervention based on critical thinking. In this way, UPD is not just a major, but a lifelong learning process.
This exhibition, titled as ‘Papers published on our lands’, highlights our department's commitment to "BETTER city, BETTER life" through two key research areas: urban regeneration and rural revitalization. It showcases both theoretical research and practical projects developed in collaboration with industry partners. By incorporating these real-world examples into teaching, students gain valuable experience in Urban Planning and Design through interdisciplinary, project-based learning. Through these research areas, UPD aims to create more sustainable, livable, and equitable human settlements for all. We invite you to explore the exhibition and celebrate the brilliant future of urban planning and design with us.
