Personal profile

Personal profile

I am an Associate Professor in Urban Planning and Design with extensive international experience in exploring the complex intersections of urban policy, transportation, and social equity. My research focuses on understanding how urban environments shape—and are shaped by—mobility, housing dynamics, and socio-spatial segregation, using a blend of quantitative, qualitative, and spatial analysis techniques. I strive to bridge the methodological rigor of STEM disciplines with insights from the social sciences and humanities, aiming to produce evidence-based strategies for sustainable, inclusive urban development. My work has been disseminated in leading academic journals and conferences, and I have been privileged to collaborate with institutions across China, South Korea, and the United States. Through both research and teaching, I am committed to advancing interdisciplinary approaches that inform public policy and urban governance.

Research interests

Dr. Chung’s research centers on critical urban challenges at the nexus of urban policy, transportation, and social equity. His work employs a blend of quantitative, qualitative, and spatial analysis techniques to explore:

  • Urban Policy and Governance: Investigating how policy decisions shape urban form, mobility, and housing dynamics. His research, for instance, examines the interplay between educational policy and residential segregation, providing empirical evidence that informs debates on school districting and urban inequality.
  • Transportation and Mobility: Utilizing advanced spatial analysis and machine learning methods to understand travel behavior and transit dynamics, thereby contributing to the development of more efficient and equitable transportation systems.
  • Housing and Socio-Spatial Segregation: Analyzing housing market dynamics and patterns of segregation to generate actionable insights for sustainable urban regeneration and inclusive community development.

This interdisciplinary approach not only enriches academic discourse but also delivers practical policy recommendations that address the complexities of modern urban environments.
