Personal profile

Personal profile

Siti Balkish Roslan is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), where her research and teaching focus on social architecture, decolonial theory, and coastal community resilience. A registered architect in Malaysia (B.Arch, UTM; MBA, UKM; PhD, UPM), she investigates how participatory design can empower marginalized communities—particularly in coastal and surfscape contexts—by blending indigenous and vernacular knowledge with contemporary architectural solutions. Her work prioritizes cultural preservation, environmental adaptation, and critiques of Eurocentric spatial paradigms, emphasizing real-world applications through collaborations within the community and society. Combining her academic expertise with professional practice, she advocates for architecture as a tool for social equity, decolonial futures, and sustainable placemaking in Southeast Asia and beyond. Her recent publication, 'Surfers Forced into a Fragmented Exteriority,' appears in the Interiority Journal.
