Abstract

In this chapter, we summarize the major findings of the study. The status of the referee’s performance in the European championship, as well as challenges, was deliberated. We also examine the advantages and drawbacks of applying technology towards the enhancement of referees’ decision-making. It is demonstrated that a set of certain performance factors coupled with players’ attitudes influences the accuracies of referees’ decisions during matches. In addition, it was demonstrated that the application of technology to aid decision-making during match play will continue to evolve; however, more efforts are still required to enhance the accuracy of the system and garner spectators’ confidence. The employment of data mining and machine learning techniques will continue to be relevant in evaluating referees’ performance and any subsequent technology that could be applied.
