Abstract

This chapter explored the positional event actions that lead to the assistance of VAR. It was demonstrated from the findings of the study that the average referee’s distance to the penalty box plus 2 m around fouls attracted more VAR assistance compared to the average referee’s distance in other zones except for the penalty box plus 2 m around. Similarly, referees’ decisions in key zones, distance 8–20 m, evoke more VAR assistance in comparison with the referees’ key zones, distance to 8 m. Moreover, the findings further demonstrated that the SVM-based model is able to yield a good prediction of the VAR intervention based on the zonal positions examined in the study.
