Yanning Huang (黄炎宁)joined the Department of Media and Communication in 2019 as an assistant professor in Communication Studies. He obtained his PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). His doctoral thesis focuses on the gender and class dimensions of Chinese internet buzzwords, exploring the different interpretations and uses of online buzzwords by youth of different social groups. His research interests include digital cultural studies, gender studies, rural-urban divide in China, discourse analysis, socio-linguistics, and environmental communication. He has published articles in both Western and Chinese peer-reviewed journals, such as Popular Communication, Cultural Studies and Communication Society. Yanning is passionate about teaching. Before joining XJTLU, he taught“international communications” at the London Centre of Fordham University. During his PhD, Yanning worked as teaching assistant of the course “media, communication and development” and dissertation officer of the Department. In addition, he has been participating in the summer school on “New Media and Justice Communication in the Global Information Society” at Fudan University for multiple times as translator and lecturer.Outside academia, he is very keen on the theory and practice of (film) photography. He is happy to share his knowledge with the public. He has published articles in media such as BJnews.com and Tootopia. He has also done several translation works including 《音乐神童加工厂》(Producing Excellence) and 《美国最佳杂志写作》系列(The Best American Magazine Writing series).
