Jacob de Baan is Senior Associate Professor of Practice at the Department of Industrial Design at XJTLU Xian Jiaotong - Liverpool University. Industrial design design managementAfter his studies at TU Delft Industrial Design Engineering and graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam, he worked as a product designer and senior designer in various agencies in the Netherlands and Germany, such as frogdesign. Since 1995 he has been working from his own studio for clients such as Philips, Van Gogh Museum and Royal Delft and for international clients such as Designers Alliance in China and Koleksiyon in Turkey. He exhibited in numerous museums and galleries. His work has been purchased by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. These experiences allow him to empathize with the diverse positions of students and young designers. He puts a lot of time into research. Such as at the European Ceramic Work Centre and for the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Design education researchIn addition to his work in the creative sector, from 2002-2017 Jacob de Baan led the Post Graduate Course Industrial Design at the Royal Academy of Art The Hague (now Master Industrial Design). In this position he developed the curriculum, supervised research projects, led the teaching team, gave lectures, coordinated graduates and was the point of contact within and outside the KABK. He also has a lot of experience in international design education, such as at the Technical University Istanbul and the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft in Berlin. Since 2018 he has been active in education for bachelor and master students at the TU Delft Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering in a variety of courses. This gives him a good insight into talent development when dealing with students.NetworkJacob de Baan has extensive administrative experience, including as a board member of the Association of Dutch Designers (BNO). He is an advisor to the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts and therefore has extensive knowledge of budgeting and business operations, audience building, marketing and talent development. This also gives him an enormous network within the breadth of the creative field.
