The Potential Uses of Augmented Reality (AR) in Temporary Bamboo Architecture

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This article aims to gauge the potential use of augmented reality (AR) in aiding temporary bamboo construction by obtaining feedback from 18 novice bamboo enthusiasts. Aimed at understanding how AR) technology can facilitate design, planning, and construction stages, the novelty of this study lies in defining an appropriate AR interface in these three interrelated stages specific to bamboo works. The study was carried out through reflections from two temporary structure bamboo build projects. Our preliminary study reveals that an AR interface for novice bamboo makers is more relevant in the design and planning stages than during the construction stage. It also found that the interface needs to be designed in conjunction with the use of physical models, instead of considering it as a substitute.
