N2 - This study explores the auditory dimensions of Virtual Reality Music Videos (VRMVs) to uncover audience experiences and expectations. While VRMVs merge musical and visual storytelling into an immersive virtual environment, research has largely overlooked the role of auditory experiences. The study adopts a qualitative approach to bridge this gap, combining focus group discussions with participants from diverse backgrounds and an expert interview with a seasoned music video professional. The findings reveal three main auditory elements that enhance audience immersion: spatiality, which elevates engagement and compensates for visual shortcomings; authenticity, realised through sound-image synchronisation and contextual alignment to create a realistic virtual setting; and interactivity, which encourages active audience participation and transforms viewers into explorers. The study emphasised the significance of designing auditory experiences from the audience's perspective to deepen immersion. These results provide foundational insights for understanding sound’s transformative role in immersive media.
