Abstract

Based on existing debates on the issue if and how modularity influences innovation, this paper studies the relationship between modularity and innovation performance as well as the mediating effect of absorptive capacity by conducting an empirical analysis of a sample of 124 high-tech enterprises in China. The results show that modularity has a positive effect on innovation performance and also promotes both potential and realized absorptive capacity. The potential absorptive capacity partially mediates the relationship between modularity and innovation performance, and so does the realized absorptive capacity. This study contributes to the mainstream contention about modular innovation effect by verifying the positive influence of modularity on corporate technology innovation.
