Design Optimization Study of the Temperature Uniformity in Air-Cooled Freezers

Abstract

In this study, an optimization framework has been proposed to improve the temperature uniformity optimization of a specific air-cooled freezer. A parametrized Computation Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model has been established to provide the cost for the Direct Optimization solver, which utilizes a multi-objective genetic algorithm. The final optimization design was obtained from the Direct Optimization solver referring to the iteration between the numerical simulation results and a series of variables related to the geometry of the parametrized CFD model. Consequently, the proposed optimization methodology demonstrates its effectiveness in enhancing the temperature uniformity within the specific air-cooled freezer through numerical simulation. Compared with the baseline, the optimization solver generated three candidate design points that achieve the maximum temperature difference reduction of the stored package. Additionally, the optimal-derived freezer exhibited a reduction in the maximum temperature difference among stored packages from 10.31 to 7.16°C.
