Dr. Long Huang [黄龙]

Associate Professor, School of Intelligent Manufacturing Ecosystems

Dr. Long Huang has over a decade of experience in thermo-fluid system modeling and simulation. His research focuses on enhancing the performance of heat exchangers through in-depth investigations of heat and mass transfer phenomena. His work has been supported by NSFC, Jiangsu Ministry of Education, and leading industry partners in the field.

Dr. Huang earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2014. Before joining Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in 2020, he gained industry experience as a consultant at Navigant Consulting Inc. (Washington D.C., USA) and a researcher at Daikin Industries Ltd. (Osaka, Japan).

PhD Application Process

1. Initial Inquiry

Email [long.huang@xjtlu.edu.cn] with:

  • Your CV
  • A brief statement of interest outlining your research background and motivation。

XJTLU has an open campus that welcomes visitors year-round. I personally maintain an open-door policy, meaning anyone is welcome to stop by whenever I am in my office.

If you prefer an onsite visit at any stage of your application process, you are more than welcome to do so. We’d be happy to accommodate your visit and discuss any questions you may have.

2. Project Assignment & Online Application

  • If your profile aligns with our research areas, I will recommend a suitable project for your application.
  • You may then proceed with the official XJTLU PhD application using the links below:
  • 👉 XJTLU PhD Application Process – Step-by-step application guidelines.
  • 👉 Link to Application Page – Choose the right category please.

3. Screening & Interview

  • Applications undergo an initial screening (typically 1–2 months).
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.

4. Final Steps

  • Successful applicants will receive detailed next steps via email.

FAQ: Application Requirements and Expectations

Q: Should I write a research proposal for my own topic or the listed scholarship project?

A: You should write your proposal based on the scholarship project you are applying for. The project title and abstract can be found in the links above.

If you wish to propose a self-initiated, university-funded PhD project (referred to as student PGRS at XJTLU) and nominate me as your supervisor, this is possible, but highly competitive and subject to a separate review process.

Q: I don’t have all the details of the scholarship project. How can I write a detailed research plan in the proposal?

A: The research proposal is an assessment of your research potential, not a strict project plan. The interview panel and graduate school will evaluate:

  • Your ability to structure research questions
  • Your understanding of relevant methodologies
  • Your critical thinking skills

Once admitted, the research plan will be refined based on the group’s ongoing work and your specific interests.

Q: Can I use Generative AI to assist in writing my proposal?

A: AI tools are acceptable by me, and I frequently use them myself. (This entire profile page of mine has been optimized by AI) However, what truly matters is the insight and originality you demonstrate. Your proposal should reflect your critical engagement with the topic, not just well-structured text.

Q: Can I apply as an undergraduate student (直博), or do I need a master’s degree?

A: XJTLU allows applicants who hold or expect to attain a bachelor’s degree before enrollment. However, you must demonstrate your competitiveness through past or current research projects, competitions, and publications.

Q: When can I apply?

A: XJTLU accepts applications year-round. However, the graduate school would need to calculate your degree classification (per UK system) at the time of their initial screening, making it challenging for current undergraduate applicants. Below are my recommendations.

  • If you are a current undergraduate student, you can apply after the first semester of your senior year, once your latest grades appear in your transcript.
  • If you are a master’s student, you can apply at any time since you already have your undergraduate transcript.
  • If you have already graduated, you can apply at any time.
