Abstract
The development of ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) in China started later than that in the United States and the developed countries in Europe. However, ESG is receiving surprisingly attention in various industries due to the determination that China has set the goal of achieving emissions peak before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060. ESG in China beauty industry remains rudimentary. This study adopts qualitative research techniques to compare the heterogeneity of ESG performance between global beauty groups and Chinese beauty companies, and to summarise the difficulties and challenges for Chinese beauty companies striving to improve ESG performance. The theoretical contribution of this research is that it is the first academic study from the perspective of beauty industry and based on the unique attributes of the cosmetics industry. Hence, this study could help to improve the cognition of ESG strategy for cosmetic companies. The practical significance is that by conducting case study, it elaborates the practical distinctions between the performance of enterprises with high ESG ratings and other enterprises, provisioning experience and enlightenment for listed Chinese cosmetic companies to improve their performances of ESG.
