Description

This two-phase mixed-methods project aims to explore the experiences of XJLTU
teachers using the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) methodology to
co-design, co-create, and implement COIL-enhanced teaching modules with their
global partners. The first phase will involve conducting semi-structured interviews and
gathering observation data to understand the challenges and opportunities faced by
teachers in this process. The second phase of the project aims to investigate the
challenges and opportunities experienced by students participating in a COIL virtual
exchange project. Quantitative data will be collected through a questionnaire survey,
which will assess the enablers and impediments experienced by XJTLU students in
COIL-enhanced modules. Qualitative data will be obtained through elicitation materials
such as students reflective reports which provide personal accounts of their
experiences in working with culturally diverse and geographically dispersed student
partners in co-constructing knowledge, and acquiring cognitive, intercultural, and other
functional competencies. The findings of this project will contribute evidence-based
data on the effectiveness of this student-centered teaching and learning methodology.
It will provide insights on how XJTLU academics can integrate intercultural and
international dimensions of learning into the curriculum, while addressing the challenge
of ensuring equitable learning opportunities for culturally diverse and geographically
distant student populations. Additionally, the results of the project can foster a COIL
Scholar Community for the exchange of effective pedagogical practices through EDUs
