Dr Wan Hu (Victoria) is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Literary and Translation Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. She did her postgraduate study at the University of Nottingham, gaining an MA in Chinese/English Translation and Interpreting and a PhD in Translation Studies.
Dr Hu is one of the first translation education scholars to teach, research and publish on the nexus between academic requirements and translation market needs. She is the author of Education, Translation and Global Market Pressures: Curriculum Design in China and the UK, published by Palgrave Macmillan and a co-author of two textbooks, Practical Course of Financial News Translation and Listening to Financial and Economic News for Translation Purpose, published by Tsinghua University Press. She has also published widely in international peer-reviewed journals and edited collections on her focused research areas: translator and interpreter training, curriculum design and development in translation education, business news translation, and higher education policy.
Dr Hu is the recipient of the two Jiangsu Province Talent Programmes: "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Doctor" and "Qinglang Project Excellent Young Scholar". In addition, she is conducting or has conducted various projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China, Jiangsu Province Government, Jiangsu Province Education Department, China National Committee for Translation and Interpreting Education, among others.
Dr Hu has much experience in educational programme design and development. She held a central role in the founding and strategic development of three translation programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels while working in a top-tier university in Beijing. At XJTLU, she initiated and developed a new BA Translation and Interpreting programme with colleagues and served as its founding programme director for three years.
In terms of learning and teaching, Dr Hu is an award winner of national level teaching contest in China. She has taught a broad range of translation and interpreting modules, both practical and theoretical. The highlight of her teaching innovation is a business news translation module that has been taught for five years in a university-industry in-depth collaboration.
In addition to her academic experience, Dr Hu has worked as a professional translator, interpreter, and international coordinator for high-level Sino-British diplomatic training programmes since 2011.
