With a Little Help From My Friend AI

Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation at conference/workshop/seminar

Description

Higher Education (HE) institutions are accustomed to responding to myriad changes and challenges in the education landscape. One of the most recent entrants into the arena is AI generative content systems. Back in November 2022, universities were stunned by the disruptive aspect of this technology. The looming threats and risks to the robustness of the existing assessments and the guarantee of academic integrity became immediately apparent. Academic institutions hastily did their best to manage the dangers and minimise their effects in the short term. It was also acknowledged that the technology is here to stay and that a longer-term digital learning strategy would need to be formulated. Some universities have already started taking proactive approaches and even launched their own AI tools. Amongst these is XJTLU’s XIPU AI (君谋, Jun Mou), a new AI assistant and AI-powered chatbot.

Currently, if claimed that the potential of AI generative content systems was limitless, it would not be seen as an exaggeration. Indeed, in a startlingly short time, this technology has risen to prominence, and it continues to be developed at a staggering speed. Therefore, in the post-ChatGPT world, it is crucial that HE institutions direct their attention to identifying the technology’s substantial opportunities. In academia, we have barely scratched the surface of how AI can be utilised in teaching and assessment. It now falls to creative practitioners, supported by their organisations, to exploit this technology in ethical and responsible ways in order to construct learner-centred and engaging environments which inspire students to learn.

In my presentation, I will show examples of how AI generative content systems have been utilised in EAP teaching to Year 2 Undergraduate students at XJTLU, and reflect on the creation of materials, and their use and effectiveness. I will also share how the technology has been incorporated into activities designed to support students and aid them in completing various tasks. Finally, I will demonstrate how AI generative content systems have been pivotal in assisting EAP instructors with assessment-related tasks in ways that benefit busy practitioners and can have wider potential applications across the HE spectrum.
