Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation at conference/workshop/seminar

Description

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) writing is a crucial component of academic success for students, particularly in the field of business. This study explores the design of syllabus and materials for Year 2 EAP business students at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University based on a needs analysis. The presentation will first highlight the importance of EAP writing and the challenges faced by students. It will then describe the design of the research, which comprised a needs analysis survey to measure students’ perceptions of their own EAP writing needs and a diagnostic analysis of students’ essays. The survey and diagnostic test results were then compared to reveal the gap between students’ perceived and actual needs. The study also identified the appropriate EAP writing approaches and material design to address these needs. The presentation will conclude by discussing the pedagogical implications of the findings and recommendations for EAP writing instructors and material designers. This study contributes to the understanding of EAP writing and provides insights into effective syllabus and material design.
