Cultivating Comprehensive Listening Skills: Moving Beyond the Conventional Comprehension Approach in English Language Acquisition

Listening, a fundamental skill in English language acquisition, often receives inadequate attention compared to other skills. Despite its significance, prevailing educational frameworks, textbooks, teacher training, and instructional methods, typically adopt a limited approach to teaching listening comprehension, which is referred as Comprehension Approach. This conventional strategy entails pre-listening tasks, gist comprehension activities, detailed questions, and subsequent tasks. This method, although widely applied for its convenience, fails to furnish learners with the requisite tools for comprehensive and balanced listening skill development. This is also one of the reasons that students often tend to perform well in the classroom with coursebook listening texts, but struggle to cope with listening to authentic discourse, with is less predication and contains various distractors, diversions, and other obstacles that make it difficult to distinguish even the main points.
Therefore, this presentation will introduce a number of ways in which teachers can move beyond this approach to teaching listening to and also enhance the rage of strategies that have at hand to better aid learning in their development of listening skills.
