Abstract

Taiwan’s regime change in May 2008 has helped remove de-jure independence from Taipei’s official agenda and paved the way for the resumption of high-level official contacts and the exchange of good-will between top leaders across the Taiwan Strait. The overall tension has been eased substantially. This has the potential to change the nature of the tripartite military interaction between Washington, Beijing and Taipei in terms of de-warization. However, still in a state of war, militaries of both sides have not adjusted their force deployment, posture and readiness to fit in the changed political environment across the Taiwan Strait.
