Abstract

Energy Storage Systems (ESS) play a crucial role in modern power systems owing to the integration of renewable energy sources. The utilization of ESS becomes a necessary component in the solution of electricity grids operation issues like stability, power quality, and systems balancing. In this review paper, based on their own intrinsic characteristics, various ESS technologies will be discussed including the working principle, application status, and development prospects for the future. Furthermore, advantages and disadvantages of ESS will be evaluated from the viewpoint of power systems. In particular, this paper will concentrate on the application of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) technologies in distribution systems. The BESS management and control algorithms will be examined based on the effectiveness of BESS in power quality, peak load shaving, system balancing, and frequency control.
