AI-powered Rubric Design in EAP: Enhancing Assessment with Generative AI

Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation at conference/workshop/seminar

Description

Rubrics are valuable tools for both instructors and students; they provide instructors with a framework to deliver precise and objective feedback, while also streamlining the grading process (Campbell, 2006; Powell, 2001). At the same time, rubrics help students by setting clear expectations, ensuring consistent grading, and promoting greater independence in their learning (Andrade & Du, 2005).However, their development—particularly in crafting detailed quality descriptions for each criterion—can be labor-intensive at the outset.A potential solution? Use generative AI to design customized rubrics tailored to your courses.

This presentation explores the integration of generative AI in designing rubrics for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses. It will begin with an overview of rubric components, highlighting the added value of using rubrics in academic assessments. Following this, the session will address common challenges faced by educators in rubric design, such as ensuring clarity, alignment with learning objectives, and consistency. The core of the presentation will focus on how to effectively engineer prompts to generate tailored rubrics using AI tools. Finally, the session will showcase practical demonstrations of generative AI in producing rubrics for EAP047 and EAP121, illustrating how AI can streamline and enhance the rubric creation process.
