Abstract

The emergence of digital platforms has altered the way business is conducted. The digital labour platform has become the main attraction for workers who seek flexibility in their employment. However, platform workers are subjected to the platform algorithm when performing their work. The objective of this study is to examine the implications of platform algorithm on platform workers’ job security. This is a qualitative study that employs library-based research and content analysis of related article journals, government statutes and case laws. Findings show that platform provider uses algorithm management in allocating work, suspension and termination of platform workers’ accounts which in some situations causes unfairness. Existing laws also do not provide avenues for platform worker to seek grievances. The findings of this study extend the discussion on artificial intelligence by examining the impact of algorithmic management on the labour rights of platform workers. This study also provides an insight on the position of platform workers and their employment rights for platform providers and serves as motivation to improve their app system.
