Abstract

Using current developments in the IoT, digital twins (DTs) are swiftly becoming a popular tool in both the business and academic worlds. The development of Industry 4.0 ideas has aided expansion, especially in manufacturing. Although it has several definitions, “Digital Twin” describes the seamless counterpart most accurately. In this work, we seek to establish similarities between the use of DT in Industry 4.0 and the research environment about DTs in the context of smart cities. While DTs have garnered much attention in the IoT for manufacturing contexts, their use in smart cities could be faster to catch on. Recent studies on DT are reviewed and organized into a systematic review. We also contend that researchers may benefit from using tried-and-true methodologies from the co-creation to deal with the practical challenges unique to this area. This study evaluates the technologies that make DTs possible, the obstacles they face, and the current areas of open research.
