Abstract

Cultural psychology of education calls for integrating international research efforts to advance theoretical developments closely rooted in local systems. In this chapter, an innovative method of “research tandem” is conceptualized and offered as a powerful tool to investigate educational phenomenon in a local setting: a Shanghai kindergarten. From this methodological thinking, the local kindergarten is framed as a window of a bigger social and cultural world, in which different values and practices interweave with each other and form a unique landscape for young children to immigrant. The method of “research tandem” couples two young researchers from two different backgrounds—local and foreign—and constitutes a powerful platform for cultivating research intuition and reflection. The structure of the book is also briefly introduced in this chapter.
