Abstract
This keynote lecture re-examines the notion of "fun" as a primary driver within contemporary visual arts (20th & 21st centuries). While this focus on entertainment contrasts with the historical dominance of beauty (Renaissance) and the sublime (Middle Ages), a more nuanced understanding is necessary.
The talk delves into the diverse motivations behind contemporary artistic practice. In the face of disruptive technologies with complex geopolitical and existencial challenges, the purpose of art may be undergoing a significant transformation. By critically evaluating the notion of fun, we can gain new insights into the role of art in navigating the challenges of the contemporary world and how it shapes our cognition.
