Abstract
This introduction provides a concise overview of the historic context in which to understand digital transformation in China and the rapid development of its creative industries. It outlines three key issues in the development of these industries: the ongoing construction of China’s national identity, China’s aspirations for soft power, and the importance of smartphones in shaping China’s digital future. It also provides a summary of the contributions made by each co-author.
