Abstract

Interplay+ is a selection curated for the H+ Museum in Suzhou by Alvaro Collar & Fengyuan Tian featuring work from Thanut Rujitanont, Joanna Polak, and Ekaterina Antonovna Asrieva.

This collection of animated works explores the profound relationship between memory, tradition, and the landscapes that shape our understanding of home. Each film serves as an archaeological expedition into the past, using animation as a tool to preserve, reconstruct, and examine the ephemeral nature of cultural memory. From the rhythmic labor of turf digging in a Polish village to the fragmented recollections of a childhood home in Thailand, these works demonstrate how traditional practices and personal histories become intertwined with the physical spaces they inhabit. The filmmakers employ experimental animation techniques to bridge temporal gaps—whether preserving disappearing village customs, examining the cyclical nature of creation and destruction, or consolidating incomplete memories into tangible form.
