Abstract

An open-air electric transmission system with cable conductors belongs to a type of substation structures and it is subjected to electromagnetic loadings in addition to the common loadings from a structural engineering viewpoint. There are two methods commonly used to analyze substation structures, i.e. the simplified method according to IEC865-1 and advanced method with simulation software. It is found that for flexible cable conductor systems with short-circuit loadings, if the conductor’s initialsagislargerthan4%ofthespan length, the simplified method will lead to non-conservative results in terms of cable tension and therefore the advanced method with simulation must be used. Advanced method, such as using ADINA, is also recommended for simulating complex cases, for modelling dynamic response of flexible conductor under short-circuit current.
