Abstract

This paper presents a dual-band flexible antenna with artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) backing for wearable applications. The proposed antenna is designed on a textile material with an overall size of 14 mm × 35 mm × 2 mm. It operates at 2.45 GHz (Industrial Scientific Medical band) and 5.8 GHz (WLAN band) for communications. An AMC reflector with a four-leaf clover-like unit cell is designed and optimized to provide two zero-crossing phases at the desired frequencies and act as a planar reflector. Simulation results show that the AMC reflector enhances the antenna realized gain from 1.80 dB to 3.09 dB at 2.45 GHz, and from 3.86 dB to 6.12 dB at 5.8 GHz. Therefore, the proposed flexible antenna with AMC backing could be a suitable candidate for wearable applications.
