Abstract

This chapter explores interdisciplinary place-based teaching by focusing on the intersection of cities and media. It presents and reflects on the pedagogy developed from two research-led teaching projects: "Architecture in Cities as Media" and "Chinese Cities Represented in Media." These projects integrate theories and methods from urban studies, media studies and other disciplines to address complex urban issues. The chapter discusses how synthetic interdisciplinarity is achieved through combining disciplinary perspectives to solve problems spanning multiple fields. It also highlights the use of place-based learning strategies, such as neighbourhood analysis and virtual worlds, to enhance student-learning experiences. The chapter aims to contribute to the development of modern educational practices by reflecting on these projects and identifying strategies to achieve interdisciplinary integration and experiential learning.
