Abstract

Interoperability is one of the major challenges of adoption of the Industrial Internet of Things. OPC UA is one of the main industrial standards for the Request-reply messaging pattern, and DDS is one of the main industrial standards for the Publish-subscribe messaging pattern. How to ensure data is communicated, understandable, and interoperable between the systems implemented by OPC UA and DDS is an industrial concern to address. This study proposes a novel middleware solution which enables effective communication between these two message patterns. We evaluate our work by testing the middleware's performance on a scenario using a Raspberry Pi and the software middleware connected to a private LAN, measuring response times and reliability.
