Abstract
Together with surrealism, it is futurism, which spread across Europe in the first half of the twentieth century, that is evoked in much of Shanghai’s fashion design field today. In Europe and the USA, the series of sweeping changes in technology and culture at that time created the distinctive new modes of thinking about and experiencing space expressed in futurism. Changes in modes of transport, from steam-powered ships and trains to aeroplanes, and the development of wireless telegraphy are often credited, as are photography and cinema, with bringing a ʼnew experience of the instantaneous and the simultaneous that gripped many artists’ (Humphreys 2006: 16). Futurism emphasised and glorified themes related to technology, speed, youth and the industrial city.
