Abstract
Scholarly attention on "sound" on film and television has been ignored in the field of media studies. This article calls for rigorous attentions from media scholars on the theorization of sound. We offer a critical insights on Michele Chion's theory that has a tendency to reduce the role of ambient sound to the mechanical function. Not only ambient sound plays a significant role as a collective sound force, but also it contributes the enhancement of narrative development of a film story by blurring boundaries between subjective point of audition (FOA) and spatial FOA. This article examines the important aspects of sound research in the field through textual analysis and theoretical reviews. In particular, authors argue that ambient sound orchestrates the poetization of cinema. This is a ruthless criticism on the unbalanced research tradition in the Korean scholarship that pays an attention heavily on the "visual" aspect of film and television.
