Abstract
This paper presents a synthetic analysis of studies on urbanisation in developed countries. It found that the essence of urbanisation is to increase quality of life for collective mass and sustainability of regional development and observes that the pathway of urbanisation in developed countries is by no means representing a kind of law of development, but rather historical mistakes. The four phrases of urbanisation (i.e. central urbanisation, suburbanisation, disurbanisation, and reurbanisation) experienced by developed countries and the social-environmental problems associated with it is by and large caused by the failure of market force and the absence of public intervention. The paper remarks that the advantages of city-region as a model for regional development are being approved by the practice of developed countries. China should learn from mistakes made by developed countries in the past and intervene proactively to develop city-region as a model for the ever largest scale of urbanisation in the world.
