After graduating with a B.A (Visual Communication), Dr Julie Bilby worked as an art director in advertising and publishing for many years. She completed a M.Bus (Marketing) degree and continued working in advertising and publishing before embarking on an academic career at RMIT University, in Melbourne, Australia. Julie’s PhD research focused on the advertising industry in China; her current research interests include advertising creativity, the advertising industry globally, and the impact of digitisation on all aspects of communication generally, and advertising specifically. She has supervised PhD and Honours theses covering such topics as the rise of programmatic advertising in China, and the adoption of AR in advertising in Malaysia and Australia. She is currently supervising a number of Masters dissertations and undergraduate final year projects, mainly related to advertising and marketing communication in the digital realm. Julie has delivered guest presentations at universities across Asia and Europe and was a visiting scholar at Fudan University, Shanghai in 2018. In 2019/20, she spent a year as a visiting Senior Lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University in Hong Kong. Julie was Programme Director of the B.Comm (Advertising) and Master of Advertising degrees at RMIT University for 7 years, and is now Associate Professor of Media and Communication at Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, China.
