Angela’s career in media and communications began in journalism, as a local news reporter, trade publication feature writer and music columnist for national publications in Britain. Her teaching experience over the past 15 years for Sino-UK programmes covers academic English, media studies and research methods - a useful combination for the teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates in the DMC. With regards to research, her interests lay in public diplomacy, Chinas soft power and the internationalization of China’s creative industries. In particular, she focuses on China’s public diplomacy and media engagement with Africa. Her PhD centred on a case study of a Chinese pay-TV company in Africa called StarTimes, and the development assistance role it plays in Sino-African relations. Her forthcoming book uses StarTimes as a prism through which to understand how politics, media and business intertwine to facilitate the expansion of China’s global influence.
