Human-AI collaboration in teaching material development: benefits, challenges and pedagogical implications for the future
Artificial intelligence has been widely integrated in language teaching. In particular, educators have explored the use of AI tools to facilitate the development of teaching materials, assessments, and the provision of feedback. However, very few studies have been conducted to critically evaluate the human-AI collaboration approach. This presentation shares research on collaborating with AI to create samples for the writing coursework of an EAP module at XJTLU. The key research questions include: 1) Are the human-AI collaborative samples effective in facilitating the instruction of writing coursework? If yes, in what ways? (2) Are there any concerns regarding collaborative samples? If yes, what are they? (3) What roles do human teachers play in collaborating to ensure high-quality material development for both current and future EAP teaching and learning? It will briefly introduce the procedures and outputs of human-AI collaborative writing. Adopting Brookfield’s four-lens reflective model and tools in computational linguistics, it will investigate human-AI chat history, peer review notes, and compare linguistic features between human samples and human-AI samples to evaluate the effectiveness of this new approach and its associated concerns. The presentation will then highlight the role of humans in addressing these challenges and discuss pedagogical implications for future education.
