Sustainable tourism with a focus on intangible cultural heritage is becoming more popular recently, particularly in China where the Chinese national government is encouraging this.
Tongli, a water town in Suzhou, is a Sustainable Tourism Pilot Area as designated by the national government. According to the “Integrated Urban Planning Framework of Tongli Town, Wujiang City of Jiangsu Province, 2002–2020”, Tourism, Culture & Arts, and Commerce & Trade will become the three key industries in the area. This investigation will work with a local homeowner to determine the feasibility of turning her family home near the designated Heritage area into a B and B with café focused on intangible cultural heritage, specifically the visual arts and nostalgia for the 90s.
