The emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools is a fundamental challenge to the way we have taught and assessed academic writing. In response to this, an innovative program of teaching the responsible and effective use of GenAI for writing was piloted in an EAP module on the Taicang Campus. After in-class instruction on these tools, focusing in particular on XJTLU’s new XipuAI chatbot, students were permitted to use GenAI in any way they wished to help write their assessed EAP writing coursework. This talk will outline the rationale for the intervention, describe the process of teaching and assessment, reflect on the results of the program, and suggest potential ways AI could challenge and benefit us as teachers and students in the future.
