Reflections on Fostering Learner Autonomy in a Hands-On Workshop for Building and Flying UAVs via EMI

Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation at conference/workshop/seminar

Description

A workshop was delivered in semester 1 of the 2022-23 academic year focusing on building and flying UAVs for the purpose of aiding visualisation of large 3D spaces for architecture students. It was a multidisciplinary collaboration between the English Language Centre and the Department of Architecture, and was intended to be an exploratory workshop to pilot potential research areas in the
future. The anticipated areas of research for ELC focused on learner autonomy and experiential learning, while for the Department of Architecture this was two-pronged in that the expected outcomes were investigating the feasibility of the build workshop itself and investigating how designers visualise with this aerial tool. This presentation will follow the journey of this workshop from its theoretical background, underlying pedagogical principles informing the design of the workshop, the successes and failures of this pilot event, and finally a reflection by the researchers which is aimed to inform the design of the
upcoming second workshop in semester 1 of academic year 2023-24.
