Professional Identity Construction of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Practitioners in China : An Ethnographic Study in a Sino-UK Joint Institution

Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation at conference/workshop/seminar

Description

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) large language models, such as ChatGPT, combined with advances in speech synthesis technology, has opened up new possibilities for AI-driven English-speaking practice. Differing from rule-driven chatbots, these models can quickly respond to learners' queries and engage in multiple rounds of highly coherent conversations. Their potential to assist in English language learning has been widely discussed. However, the effectiveness of these models in improving the speaking skills of EFL earners has not been fully explored. This research aims to develop a diverse, stratified AI dialogue system within an AI-powered speech assessment program utilising XIPU AI. This system is designed to assist EFL learners in independently practising spoken English and receiving effective textual feedback.
