Global competence encompasses the comprehensive capabilities that all students may acquire in order to navigate and thrive in a diverse and interconnected world. There is a growing consensus among scholars and educators regarding the significance of developing learners’ global competence, emphasizing its necessity rather than a luxury in education. Building global competence empowers learners to enhance their employability by acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to investigate and formulate opinions on local or global issues, collaborate effectively in culturally diverse groups, and appreciate different perspectives and languages.In this presentation, we will explore a case study that examines how integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as learning topics in an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) module at XJTLU effectively develop students’ global competence. By incorporating relevant and authentic sources and materials, language teachers may effectively engage learners in their language learning and promote their global competence. This presentation will delve into the concept of global competence, highlight its four domains, and discuss feasible approaches for language teachers to explore, adapt, and utilize, including brainstorming, group presentation, poster designing, curation and reflection, etc.
