N2 - A firm constantly orchestrates and redeploys its competencies through timely and accurate retrieval to maintain a fit with its environment. This article advances a theory of a firm’s indexing capability consisting of architecting, stocking, and retrieving and examines its impacts on the retrieval of firm competencies, which will be moderated by the attributes of competencies and the contexts where they are called for. Architecting provides an architectural system for stocking and retrieving firm competencies. Stocking helps the firm track the content and location of the competencies. Retrieving allows the firm to access and assess the needed competencies.
