Sensing high pH and ASR detection in cementitious materials

Abstract

This paper presents research on the spectroscopy detection of pH change and the detection of alkali-silica reaction (ASR) through the use of meso-tetra(pentafluorophenyl)porpholactone (TFPL) and its Pt(II) complex. The ability of TFPL and TFPLPt to function as an optical high pH sensor is described and tested. The dynamic range for the sensor TFPLPt in solution is from pH 11.5 to 13.2. The calibration of the sensor with a high pH electrode is also described and a digital imaging technique is proposed based on the application of an ASR detection kit. This paper summarizes the current work on imaging techniques for ASR detection as well as optical fibre pH sensor preparation and evaluation.
