Abstract

Power line communication is a promising candidate of smart grid applications. Organizations such as IEEE and ITU-T have published standards to cover applications of power line communication in smart grid. However, recent research reveals that indoor power line channel is a timevarying channel which may cause severe intercarrier interference to the OFDM systems in those standards. It is known that banded OFDM with receiver windowing is a good low complexity solution to this problem. Our research has shown that receiver window design of power line communication is different from that of wireless communication due to the difference between their channels. In this paper we propose a maximum signal-tointerference- noise ratio based window design criterion as well as a scheme that is used to control the complexity of equalization. Simulation results indicate that our method performs well and it is more suited to power line communication than other methods proposed for wireless communication.
