Abstract

NDDs are becoming increasingly prevalent and burdening the mainstream medical sectors. Hence, it is imperative to explore alternative and supportive approaches to therapy. A wide range of nonpharmacological therapies is covered in this chapter including physical exercises, cognitive training, psychotherapy, lifestyle changes, and new interventions such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS). The mechanisms underlying these interventions, in particular, neuroplasticity, are addressed, with discussion on their affordability and influence on the life quality and functional outcomes. Cost, personalization, and technologies, among other challenges, are briefly discussed. The chapter concludes with a call to action for holistic care approaches in NDD management.
