Abstract
The audiovisual piece "Generative Sibelius" by Juan Carlos Vasquez was part of the exhibition Friends Everywhere 大家都是朋友嘛 in Suzhou, China, from November 23rd, 2024 until January 16th, 2025.
About the exhibition:
600 works/series of works are scattered throughout the Suzhou Metro line, forming the matrix of this aesthetic movement – it is like a marathon, starting with each work, and the general public with whom art should dialogue is following closely behind. Art is no longer an independent act within an art community, but is instead socially engaged, interpenetrating with social reality. This interpenetration is not a renunciation of artistic autonomy, but rather a negotiation that is more closely intertwined with society.
Through the social form of artists “pulling in” artist friends, friends from different ages, regions, and backgrounds quickly come together and naturally “grow” apart. This format aims to collectively reverse the tone of “foreigners”(outsiders) and attempt to “break the circle”in the current institutional landscape. Based on this, an artist network intertwined with the local transportation network forms a societal blueprint, reconnecting art with the real world and bridging the aesthetics in society.
