Personal profile

Dr. Pengjing Xu is a Senior Associate Professor of Practice at the School of AI and Advanced Computing, XJTLU Entrepreneur College in China. He obtained his Bachelors and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2001 and 2007, respectively. In addition, he holds a Senior Engineer certificate in artificial intelligence from Shanghai.Dr. Xu has extensive experience in academia, research, and technology transfer. He has worked at prestigious institutions such as the National Eye Institute (NEI) of National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Ohio State University (OSU) in the USA, as well as the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering (NIMTE) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Shanghai Technology Development Ltd. Co. in China.Dr. Xus research is focused on the integration of neurophysiology and psychophysics with Artificial Intelligence to address the major research needs and gaps identified by the NEI Low Vision and Blindness Rehabilitation Panel. He aims to develop novel ophthalmic equipment and improve low-vision care in clinical practice through his research endeavors.Dr. Xus recent work has centered on a medical perimetry project, where he led the research and development effort to create a Bayesian Adaptive Multimodule Coordinate Algorithm (BAMCA). This algorithm has been demonstrated to provide an accurate, precise, and efficient mapping of the visual field in patients with various eye conditions, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, early cataract, and age-related macular degeneration. Furthermore, the BAMCA has enabled the identification of core metrics of other functional visions, such as visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, and addressed technological challenges. Dr. Xu has also integrated the BAMCA with eye tracking and OCT devices to enhance its effectiveness in eye clinics.
