Personal profile

I have over a decade of experience in teaching and research in International Relations with a focus on International Relations (IR) Theory, International Security, and Russian and Chinese Foreign Policy. I received my PhD at the University of California at Berkeley (2012) and also completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University (2013-14).From 2013-14 I was an associate professor at the Higher School of Economics (HSE), Russia’s premiere social science university (ranked 45th in Politics and IR by the QS World University Rankings in 2021). I will begin a new appointment as an associate professor at Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University in the fall of 2023.My area of interest is International Relations Theory, with an emphasis on Security and an empirical focus on Russian and Chinese foreign policy. My current research examines the role of status in generating international conflict, focusing on why declining powers exhibit a tendency to adopt aggressive and risky foreign policies.
