The Intersection Between Flexibility and Modularity: An Approach for Sustainable Housing

Activity: SupervisionMaster Dissertation Supervision

The focus on sustainable design is rapidly increasing in the field of architecture. Studies and architectural practices have shown that designers innovate with building typologies and construction strategies to establish a sustainable model. The aim of this flexibility is to enable buildings to adapt to dynamic living styles and societal relationships, and the modularity offers easier and more-flexible construction. These aspects often appear in the same project, which raises the question of how the intersection between flexibility and prefabrication can inspire sustainable designs. The purpose of this research was to discover and study the intersection between flexibility and modularity in sustainable housing design. Case studies grouped by the typology of flexibility were analysed. By using diagrams to show the building elements involved in flexible design and modular prefabrication for each case study, the relationship between flexibility and modularity was determined. The result shows a strong connection between flexibility and modular prefabrication. Similar building elements are shared to achieve flexibility and modularity in every case. Modular prefabrication not only enhances flexibility performance, but also improves the sustainability in the environmental and economic areas.
